Charles Sams was born in Freckenham on 31st December 1894 (Mildenhall Q1-1895 4A:834) son of Henry Charles Wales and Elizabeth SAMS (née BAKER)
1901 census... Aged 6, he was at "The Shop", Freckenham, with his father Henry [44] grocer/shopkeeper, born Stradishall; his mother Elizabeth [38] born Whitton, brother George[16] solicitors clerk, born Snailwell, sister Christine [12] born Snailwell; sister Marjorie [8], brother Frederick V [3] and sister Dorothy all born in Freckenham and cousin Annie L [16] born Hasketon, Suffolk. 1911 census... Aged 16 he was a draper's clerk in London at Messrs Marshall & Snellgrove, 16 Marylebone Lane, 334 and 348 Oxford Street. His parents, brother Frederick, sisters Marjorie and Dorothy and cousin Annie were still at "The Shop", in Freckenham. |

He enlisted in the West Yorkshire Regiment (23574), then reached the rank of Sergeant in the Machine Gun Corps(9999) before being commissioned in the
Queens Own (Royal West Regiment) on the 12th April 1917. His records at Kew ref WO 339/102125. This will be explored on next visit to Kew. |
